Sidney Cadawallader II

SIDNEY “SID” CADWALLADER II (b. 1933; d. 2015) was born and lived most of his life in Yardley, PA.  He attended Fallsington Friends School, George School, Swarthmore College, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School.  He practiced law on the Main Street of Yardley for 60 years.

He and his wife Carolyn and their four children traveled widely and treasured their time in the Poconos, Vermont, and the Maine woods.  He loved the out-of-doors and seized every chance he could to hike, skate, camp, swim, hunt, and play tennis.  In Maine, Sid purchased a 300-acre piece of pristine woodlands on a remote lake, then created a conservation association of like-minded families to share the joys of remote backcountry vacations. Sid and Carolyn were responsible for the tradition of flying the United Nations flag at Pennswood, in addition to the American flag.

During high school, he joined a peace caravan sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC).  A life-long Quaker, he helped rejuvenate the Yardley Friends Meeting and build a new meeting house to accommodate its growth.  He played an active part in defusing racial tensions during the time when Levittown was being integrated.  He was among the first peace marchers in the symbolic Nazareth to Bethlehem (PA) walk held each Christmas season.  He joined with others to pledge their homes for bond as part of the Bucks County Bail Bond Project.  He was active in the Yardley Lion’s Club and reveled in the capers of the historic Yardleyville Protective Association for the Apprehension of Horse Thieves & Other Villains.  Of all the things Sid did, perhaps he was proudest to be counted among the founding board members of Pennswood Village.  He and Carolyn, his wife of 76 years, made Pennswood their final home for over 20 years.
