As a structure, the gazebo gives one the feeling of being protected and enclosed, yet it is completely open. It invites you to pause, share conversations, and be in social communion. This innate characteristic of the gazebo is represented in other architectural features of our campus. Throughout the buildings, there are little conversational alcoves and spaces furnished to invite guests to come out of their private rooms and relax in shared common spaces. These spaces feature comfortable chairs and good natural light that is perfect for reading or quiet conversation. Like the gazebos, they are open – a part of the commons to be enjoyed by all.
Pennswood fosters community with numerous public spaces in our common areas. These range in size from a couple of wing-backed reading chairs, lounge areas for groups of six or eight with books and comfortable seating, modern conference rooms, and a modern assembly hall with theatrical equipment. The dining areas likewise encourage conversation and fellowship and offer everything from al fresco patio tables to more formal, linen-and-silver seating arrangements.
We chose the gazebo sketch below as our Telling Our Stories logo to symbolize the common aspects of community life: enclosed yet open, public yet intimate, sheltered yet not isolated.
